MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)

Improved motor function. Reduced neuropathic pain. Improved balance and coordination.

MS is a lifelong complex condition characterized by an abnormal response of the body's immune system, which includes brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. While its causes remain a mystery, its progression and impact on the individual who suffers from it is well documented.

When someone develops MS, their body's immune system begins to attack their central nervous system (CNS).

This attack creates a vicious circle. The body's T cells enter the central nervous system and attack the myelin sheaths that surround axons (the projections between neurons that carry signals). In the early stages of MS, the body will be able to repair the damage caused by these attacks by remyelination. But over time, repeated attacks by T cells in the body create an inflammatory response. This recruits additional immune cells to the site, which also attack the body.

Eventually, the body will no longer be able to keep up with these attacks. Its repair process will fail and will form scar-like plaques over the axons, which lead to the symptoms of the MS condition such as :

  • Vision problems
  • Difficulty moving limbs
  • Deficit sensation
  • Balance issues

Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating degenerative disorder that can only be effectively treated using therapies that stop the body's immune system from attacking itself and regenerate tissue that has already been damaged.

Unfortunately, conventional therapies are unable to address these fundamental elements of MS, so at best they can slow progression in certain subgroups of patients.

Currently, there is no cure for MS. Conventional treatment approaches primarily focus on managing MS symptoms rather than addressing the root causes. Many prescribed medications for symptom management can have adverse side effects and often fail to slow down disease progression.

Stem Cell therapy has shown great potential in the management of multiple sclerosis, which is a disease that is both neurodegenerative and autoimmune. As stem cell therapy can be both immunomodulatory (able to regulate the immune system) and regenerative, it represents an attractive alternative therapy for MS and other conditions characterized by both inflammation and tissue deterioration. Studies have shown that therapy with stem cells may be able to slow down the progression of MS in patients.

TREATMENT GOALS

Our treatment programs aims to reduce overall chronic low-grade inflammation within the body, with the effects expected to be long-lasting. Stem cells possess a unique ability to migrate to sites of damage and inflammation, orchestrating the repair and regeneration of deteriorated tissues while modulating the immune system for improved health.

Depending on the patients initial condition, the benefits of stem cell therapy may include a reduction in debilitating symptoms, a deceleration in disease program and an overall enhancement in the quality of life.
