Crohn's disease can have a profound impact on an individuals quality of life. Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes swelling of the tissue (inflammation) in digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition.
Inflammation can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people, most commonly the small intestine. The inflammation often spreads into the deeper layers of the bowel. Crohn's disease can be painful and debilitating and sometimes it can lead to life threatening complications.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms involves multiple segments and it can be continuous. In some people, the disease is only in the colon, which is part of the large intestine.
Signs and symptoms can range from mild to severe. They usually develop gradually, but sometimes it can come on suddenly, without warning. There are also periods of time with no signs and symptoms - remission.
CAUSES
The exact cause of Crohn's disease remains unknown.
Several factors play a role in its development.
- IMMUNE SYSTEM - it is possible that a virus or bacteria can trigger Crohn's disease. When the immune system tries to fight off an invading microorganism or environmental triggers, an atypical immune response causes the immune system to attack the cells in the digestive tract.
- HEREDITY - Crohn's disease is more common in people who have family members with the disease, so genes can play a role in making people more likely to have it.
STEM CELL THERAPY FOR CROHN'S DISEASE
Recent scientific studies have illuminated the remarkable effectiveness of mesenchymal stem cell therapy for inflammatory disease like Crohn's.
In 2018 study revealed that MSCs orchestrate both local and systemic innate and adaptive immune responses through the release of various mediators, including immunosuppressive molecules, growth factors, exosomes, chemokines, complement components and various metabolites.
